J.R.R. Tolkien’s novel The Lord of the Rings might be greatest literary masterpiece of the 20thcentury. Part of its genius derives from the creative tensions it establishes, for example between our loyalties to local and global communities, and between our desire for dangerous adventure and our equal longing for a restful paradise. Another brilliant component of the novel relates to the way in which it transfigures and reworks the literary inheritance of such great predecessors as Shakespeare and Richard Wagner. This course explores these and other aspects of this great novel, placing an emphasis on how, through them, Tolkien expresses a resolutely Catholic moral vision.
