“Plato’s Proofs for the Existence of the Soul”
Dr. Fulvio Di Blasi, Director of the Thomas International Center
343 E Six Forks Road, Suite 130, Raleigh, NC 27609
In preparation for making our first video courses available online in January, Fulvio Di Blasi will lead a series of seven lectures for our supporters spanning central philosophical topics.
This lecture, the sixth in the series, focuses on the specific proofs given by Plato for the existence of the soul, especially (1) on the proof from the “immortal and unchanging” truths, and (2) on the proof from the “ideal opposites”. These are two of the more fascinating proofs for the immortality and spirituality of the soul in the history of philosophy. Even those who want to criticize Plato cannot deny that his insights on the intelligible universals are very powerful. Two objections raised against the proofs—the one comparing the soul to a “harmony” and the one comparing the soul to “an old weaver”—are surprisingly very helpful in understanding contemporary approaches to the mind/body problem.
