Giuseppe Girgenti

Giuseppe Girgenti

Research fellow of History of Ancient Philosophy

Giuseppe Girgenti was born in Palermo in 1967 and studied at the Catholic University of Milan, from which he graduated in Philosophy in 1989 with a thesis entitled Platonism and Christianity in St. Julian Martyr, with the supervision of Giovanni Reale. Since then he has been interested into the history of pagan and christian platonism, in the borderline area between Antiquity and Middle Ages, philosophy and theology.

In 1990 he received a Phd in Philosophy and studied in Germany at the Ludwig-Maximillians Universität of Munich with Werner Beierwaltes (whose Augustine’s studies he translated into Italian); then he moved on to France and he studied at the Collége de France of Paris whith Pierre Hadot (whose work about Pophirius and Marius Victorinus he translated into Italian). In 1994 he discussed his Phd dissertation entitled Porfirius: between henology and ontology. In 1994-1996 he held a post-doctoral fellowship from Centro di Ricerche di Metafisica (Research Center of Metaphysics) at the Catholic University of Milan, where he worked as publishing editor of the series “Temi metafisici e problemi del pensiero antico” and “Platonismo e filosofia partristica” (Vita e pensiero publishers), and “Testi a fronte” (Rusconi).

From 1997 to 2009 he has been teaching fellow of History of Philosophy at the International Academy of Philosophy in the Pincipality of Lichtenstein. Then he widened his interests to realistic phenomenology, translating into Italian works written by Jan Patocka, Karol Woityla, Adolf Reinach and Josef Seifert. At the same time, he tried to combine the theoretical approach of phenomenologists with the Hans-Georg Gadamer’s historical-hermeneutical one, whom he knew personally during the last part of his life (from 1999 to 2002). He took part to several national and international conferences and held courses in Sicily, in Monreale (Palermo) at the Liceo Classico Basile, and in Syracuse at the Instituto Universitario di Studi Universitari. In Syracusa he organised several philosophical events hosting personalities like Hans-Georg Gadamer, Gianni Vattimo, Giovanni Reale, Imre Toth, Massimo Cacciari e Hans Küng. He is editor of the philosophy series “Il Pensiero occidentale” and “Testi a fronte” of Bompiani publishing house, Milan. He teaches at the Faculty of Philosophy of the Vita-Salute University, Milan, since it was founded in 2002.
